Competition Law Awareness Seminar Conducted
A Competition Law Awareness Seminar was conducted in the morning of 15 June 2026 at Ayeyar Shwe Wah Hall in Pathein, Ayeyarwady Region, under the organization of the Department of Trade. At the awareness programme, the Minister for Planning, Economic and Finance of the Ayeyarwady Region Government delivered the opening remarks, stating that regarding competition law, business operators would be explained on their duties and obligations to comply with the law to ensure fair competition, prohibited anti-competitive practices, and matters to be avoided. He further stated that the Myanmar Competition Law aims to promote national economic development by regulating unfair market competition among business entities. The Chairman of the Ayeyarwady Region Chamber of Commerce and Industry, U Nyi Nyi Tun, delivered a greeting speech, noting that fair competition has become a fundamental element for the economic development of any country within the global economic system. He stated that as economic development progresses, investments, new technologies, foreign companies, and domestic enterprises increase, leading to greater market competition. Accordingly, proper enforcement of competition law would improve the business environment and benefit MSMEs, investors, and consumers alike. He also added that ARCCI would cooperate in promoting fair competition and responsible, accountable investment practices. The Vice-Chairman of the Myanmar Competition Commission, Dr. Thuta Aung, in his explanatory remarks on the Competition Law, Rules, and the Myanmar Competition Commission, stated that in order to develop the MSME sector and the private sector, a sound competitive environment must be established to regulate free and fair competition. He further noted that competition law is being implemented not only in Myanmar but also in ASEAN member countries. He also explained the duties and obligations of business operators under the Competition Law to ensure fair competition, as well as prohibited anti-competitive practices and matters to be avoided. Subsequently, Staff Officer U Zeyar Lin Htun from the Myanmar Competition Commission Office explained the procedures for receiving complaints under the Competition Law, complaint submission formats, and the step-by-step enforcement process following complaints. Thereafter, participants raised questions regarding Myanmar’s competition law, and the relevant officials responded through interactive discussions. The Competition Law Awareness Seminar was attended by the Minister for Planning, Economic and Finance of the Ayeyarwady Region Government, the Chairman of the Ayeyarwady Region Chamber of Commerce and Industry, government departmental representatives, associations, and business operators.
